  • There are 16 counties in the state of Nevada. The first Nevada Territorial Legislature created nine counties on November 25, 1861, and the number has remained at 16 since then.

What were the original counties in Nevada?

The original counties were created in 1861, when the territory was organized. At that time, Nevada had nine original counties:

  1. Storey County
  2. Ormsby County (renamed Carson County in 1864 and then consolidated into present-day Carson City in 1969)
  3. Washoe County
  4. Lyon County
  5. Churchill County
  6. Nye County
  7. Douglas County
  8. Lander County
  9. Humboldt County

These original counties have since been divided and reorganized.
