…as the Assembly appoints ex-DIG Patron, awards him for selfless service

Former Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Udom Ekpoudom, has been appointed as patron of Akwa Ibom Elderly Citizens Assembly (AKECA).

The investiture held at the Lady Dorathy Ekpoudom Hall, Tower of Ivory Schools, Abak, on Tuesday, August 18.

The event climaxed with another honour on Ekpoudom as the body also presented an award of excellence to the Chairman, Towers of Ivory Schools.

Speaking at the investiture, the National President of AKECA, Obong Ememobong Essien, made it known their decision to confer double honours on Ekpoudom was inspired by his(Ekpoudom) deep-rooted love for elders, long aged selfless services to humanity and immensed contribution to the educational development of the state.

Essien added that Ekpoudom has also perfectly met the primary qualifications of the recent appointment as clearly spelt out in AKECA constitution.

“We want to inform you that the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Udom Gabriel Emmanuel was the first to be granted the award of grand patron of AKECA, his Deputy– Mr Moses Ekpo MFI, is our Life Patron and by the power given to me by the Executive and the entire members of Elderly Citizens Assembly, Akwa Ibom State, you are now appointed Patron of AKECA,” he pronounced.

The National President, who is also the founding member of the group which birthed in 2016, lauded Ekpoudom for his positive impacts on the lives of thousands of children, youth, women, men and elders in the State.

In his remark, Ekpoudom appreciated the group for the double honours on him and his family by extension, owning up that he least expected such at the time.

The astute administrator said the double honour on him is a big challenge for him to deepen his kindness to humanity and serve the elders even better.

Commending the body for taking practical steps towards changing the unwholesome practice where awards are conferred on wrong and undeserving individuals instead of right and deserving members of the society, he submitted that Nigeria will be a better place if individuals take a cue from the group.

Also expressing her heart of gratitude was the Coordinator of Tower of Ivory Schools and Wife of the retired DIG, Mrs Dorothy Ekpoudom, who specially thanked God for pre-destining such a great day for her husband and thanked the group for recognizing him.

Udom Ekpoudom was born on the May 24, 1953, into the royal family of Chief Udo Ekpoudom of Uruk Ata Ikot Ebo in Etim Ekpo LGA. He enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP) in 1978. In 1982, he was promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Police. He rose to the rank of Superintendent of Police in 1984 and in 1997, Chief Superintendent of Police.

He became the Commissioner of Police and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in 2000 and 2006 respectively. His professionalism, integrity and track records earned him the enviable rank of Deputy Inspector of Police in 2008. Later in December 2010, he voluntarily retired from the Police Force. Upon retirement, he launched into full time service to humanity.
