… government assures on timely intervention
A land slide has been reported in Nung Udoe, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, following a heavy downpour that lashed the area overnight, leading to the blockage of Nung Udoe Market and Nsit Ubium Local Government Area.
The Commissioner of Works and Fire Service, Professor Eno Ibanga, who visited the community on Wednesday, August 25, to access the situation, sympathized with the community and assured work would commence at the location as soon as possible.
He added that the construction firm known as Niger Pet Company, would be on ground to construct a precast concrete across the ravine area so that people at the other area could gain access to the other side of the road.
“ Since we are the end users of this location, what we are doing is to intervene immediately, as this is part of the government responsibility,” he said.
“If we don’t arrest this situation as soon as possible, the whole road will be gone.Already, the community has been cut off from their activities,” the Commissioner added.
Professor Ibanga said that with the devastating level of the ecological problem, the State will not wait for the Federal Government to act on it but will adopt appropriate mechanism to cushion the effect of land slide on the area.
He promised that the State government will take proactive action while waiting for the response from the Federal Government through the Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals
“When I leave here, i will discuss and interface with the Commissioner for Environment and Solid Mineral to come and overstudy the environment to know the cause of this land slide and proffer solution since this may also be caused by human activities,”He said.
“We have observed that human activities have also affected some of the environmental degradation,”He noted.
The Commisioner called on other local government to be on the watch of what is happening in their areas and take prompt action that would check such environmental disaster, especially during this rainy season.
“We have to enlighten the people to stop dumping refuge in inappropriate places as this could cause problems to the environment,” he advised.
The Manager, Niger Pet, Eng. Eric Ese, said his company will do the needful to ensure a precast concrete facility for a rapid check of the landslide.
The inspection visit had in attendance, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Works and Fire Service, Engr. John Itiat, Director, Civil Directorate, Eng. Akaninyene Henry, and Correspondent Chapel led by the Chairman, Comrade Idongesit Ashimiri.
