A week’s headcount of commercial sex workers operating in Bauchi state has begun.
The permanent commissioner, Alhaji Aminu Balarabe, Hisbah command in Bauchi state, said this while inaugurating the headcount exercise of sex workers on Wednesday, 28 July 2021.
Furthermore, he stated that the exercise was created to help and empower sex workers to ensure they quit prostitution and become self-reliant.
Consequently. He added that the exercise was not to witch hunt or discriminate against sex workers but the state government wants to assist in bringing them together with their families.
Bauchi State Government Begins Sex Workers Headcount
Balarabe said the state government needed to perform the exercise to carefully plan and determine the financial and moral commitment to rehabilitate the sex workers.
A Community Leader, Malam Yakubu Bakawu asked the Hisbah board not to relocate residents of the area.
Again, Chairman, Nigeria Hotels Association in the State, Mr. Patrick Anyanwu, said they were 41 brothels in the area and added that the empowerment exercise will reduce poverty, crime and immoral act in the state.
Hafsat Aliyu added that the government should keep to its promise of empowering sex workers and also added that she was ready to quit prostitution and become self-reliant.
