The Hon Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Ini Adiakpan has called on parents to have proper communication with their girl children, in order to guide them in knowing and standing up for their rights.
Dr Adiakpan was speaking at Afaha Unity Hall, Odot in Nsit Atai Local government Area on Sunday, during the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2020, with the theme, My Voice, Our Equal Future
She said that home training was very important in building the character of the girl child for a successful future.
Dr. Adiakpan advised girls to have mentors instead of depending on their peers for important decisions in life.
She said that there are women achievers in the society that girls could adopt as role models, to avoid making mistakes that will cost them their future.
She praised the governor of the state, Deacon Udom Emmanuel for sustaining the free and compulsory education to ensure that more girls enrol in school.
The Deputy Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mrs Felicia Bassey said that the girl child deserves to be nurtured and protected instead of being exposed to abuse.
She condemned the rising cases of rape and other violent crimes against women and girls, adding that government will not hesitate to punish men who indulged in such vices.
Presenting a paper at the event, a retired permanent secretary and indigene of Nsit Atai, Mrs. Bassey Eshiet, said that the girl child was entitled to certain rights, including the right to life, the right to education, the right to health among others.
