Brief NECO History
NECO was created by former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar in April 1999. it was the first Federal organization to offer subsidized registration to academic candidates in Nigeria. NECO was mandated to take over the responsibilities of the National Board of Education Measurement (NBEM). Its maiden examination took place in mid-2000.
The establishment of the National Examinations Council (NECO) in April 1999, is a culmination of reaction of the Federal Government to widespread escalating agitations for a national examination outfit that would be responsive to the Nigerian needs and demands as well as cope with the annually increasing number of secondary school candidates to take Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) nationwide. Series of panels had earlier been set up to address the issues before this vital decision was taken.
NECO’s vision is to preparing and administering standard and credible nationally and internationally acceptable examinations, which can enable the Nigerian child further his education without let or hindrance. Its mission is to ensure that the examinations conducted by NECO are in conformity with the provisions, expectations and yearnings of the National Policy on Education and the National Curriculum.
NECO Timetable
The NECO TIMETABLE is released yearly. It is the scheduled time for NECO to take place. For the year 2023, the National examination council (NECO) is scheduled to start on the 3rd of July 2023 and end on the 11th of August 2023.
Each paper of this examination is to last a maximum of 3hrs and a minimum of 1 hour, 45 minutes.
Unlike JAMB, the total number of subjects written In NECO is a maximum of nine (9) and a minimum of Eight (8). These include two (2) Compulsory subjects, English Language and Mathematics; the remaining Six (6) or Seven (7) subjects will now be based on your area of interest.
The NECO internal examinations are designed for students in their third and final year of senior secondary education. This annual examination assesses students’ academic abilities and helps to determine their eligibility for tertiary education.

Some of the tips for success in a NECO examination includes;
- Give yourself enough time to study and revise what you have read (Early preparation), cramming is not an effective strategy in NECO writing,
- Create a study schedule which works for you and you will follow strictly
- Practicing of past questions and joining of effective groups to read and revise together
- Take a break once in a while to maintain a healthy lifestyle (for example, Getting enough sleep to cool your brain, eating properly and exercising regularly) are also some important guidelines for excellence in the NECO examination.
