The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Uyo Branch has called for proper harmonization and a Special salary Structure for Engineers working in Akwa Ibom State Civil Service.
The Society made the call on Tuesday when the Chairman of the branch Engr. Ukeme Okpob led Executive Committee Members and Senior Engineers of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Uyo Branch to a courtesy visit to the Akwa Ibom State Head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien in his office at Government House, Uyo.
Engr. Okpob while Speaking at the Courtesy Visit appealed for urgent harmonization and step advancement to all Engineers from grade level 9 to grade level 16 who were affected by the recent conflicting circular on enhanced entry point for Engineers in Civil/public service to boast their morale and also maintain seniority in cadre to avoid disharmony in service.
Engr Okpob also appealed for creation of Engineering Department in all MDAs, pleading that Engineers who are very veritable and inevitable partners in development should be given befitting allowances that cover hazard, medical, overtime etc to commensurate their input and effort in contributing to the socio-economic advancement of the State.
“It is understood that all other professionals serving in the public service have their special salary scales except Engineers. We plead that Engineers who are very veritable and inevitable partners in development should be given befitting allowances that cover hazard, medical, overtime etc to commensurate their input and effort in contributing to the socio-economic advancement of the State for the overall development of the State.”
He called on the Akwa Ibom State Government not to employ Non Licensed Engineers to superintend over any engineering issue to avoid engendering professionalism and to rid quacks out of the system, appealing to government to look inwards within the State and engage resourceful professionals to be appointed into committees overseeing infrastructural development and also to be given opportunities to heads top relevant Ministries and Directorates that require professionalism of Engineering.
He appreciated Elder Effiong Essien for his attention and his continuous support to the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Uyo Branch and invited him to the forthcoming NSE Uyo 2021 Engineering Conference and Annual General Meeting which is holding on August 28, 2021 with a theme: “The Critical Role of Engineers in Consolidating the On-going Infrastructural and Industrial Development of Akwa Ibom State”.
Responding, the Head of Civil Service Elder Effiong Essien appreciate members of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Uyo Branch for the visit, saying that the visit will create a synergy between the State Government and Professional Engineers in the State.
He noted that Governor Udom Emmanuel is very much concern on human capital development, hence the continuous retraining of Civil Servants in the state.
He appealed to the NSE Uyo Branch to collaborate with Government in retraining their Engineering Colleagues for greater productivity in service and to enlighten them to take advantage of different opportunities from the Industrialisation drive going on in the State.
“Do well to sharpen your skills to meet up with the latest technology in the future. Have a wider knowledge on your field of specialization to meet up with the required skills needed by different industries spanning up in the State” he said.
On the issue of using Non Licensed Engineers, Elder Essien said “When we employ we give little time for the newly employed Engineers to do the registration and attend all the professional courses necessary for the profession”.
He assured that proper harmonization and special salary for Engineers will be looked into, adding that Creation of Engineering Department in all all Ministries, Department and agencies may not be applicable to all MDAs since not all the MDAs are in need of Engineers. “But the ones needed. We will do the needful”.
Elder Essien however declared his intention to participate in the forthcoming NSE Uyo 2021 Engineering Conference and Annual General Meeting, saying that the theme of the conference is in line with the the Completion agenda of His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel.
The highpoint of the courtesy visit was the presentation of official invitation letter from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to the Head of Civil Service to release Engineers in the State Civil Service to attend this year’s COREN Assembly holding in Abuja in August 2021.
